Unforgettable Family Getaways: Top Vacations for Families of 4 or 5!

Planning a vacation for families of 4 or 5 can either be super fun or incredibly stressful. There are so many things to consider – where to go, what’s your budget, who likes to do what, what activities are available, when to go, and for how long. The pressure is intensified for parents with kids old enough to offer input, but even those parents are aware of the value of including kids in the planning process for any fruitful family adventure.

Though they can require precise planning, family vacations done well will give you the opportunity to press the reset button. With promises of a fun getaway on the horizon, your kids will probably also be on their best behavior in the weeks/months leading to your vacation! Though it can be more difficult to plan a vacation for families of 4 or 5, the travel industry is, fortunately, responding to the demands of families and more offerings are becoming available to accommodate larger and multigenerational families, from airfare deals to special accommodation packages.

As you get set to create new and lasting memories with the home team, we’ve summed up some of the best options for vacations for a family of 4 or 5. Hopefully, this accelerates your planning process, so you can be on a warm Caribbean beach that much sooner!

1. All-inclusive resorts

All-inclusive family resorts are a definite win for parents. There are so many offerings at these resorts that make the entire experience worthwhile when compared to other fun but less inclusive options. Many all-inclusive resorts easily accommodate families of 4 in a standard room, while families any bigger will likely be a lot more comfortable with a suite. Whatever your category of accommodation, if you choose to stay at Beaches’ all-inclusive resorts, you can enjoy neat inclusions like land and water sports, a water park and multiple pools, extensive food options in the numerous restaurants, and a beach that’s as wide as it is fun.

Beaches Negril Family Cabana

Some of the top choices for family accommodation at Beaches include two-bedroom suites, large family suites, seaside villas, and more. The cherry on top of the Beaches experience is that mom and dad get to have some alone time with lots of included activities and Kids Camps available during the day, and extras like nanny services for kids of all ages!

Explore what’s available at Beaches Ocho Rios, Beaches Negril, or the Beaches Turks & Caicos.

2. Water park vacations

What kid is going to say no to a chance at getting wet and wild? None that we can think of… That’s why planning a waterpark adventure is a great idea no matter how many kids you’re going with. In fact, it’s better when you’re going with more than one kid since they can keep each other entertained if you’re not quite ready to get wet. Even if there’s an age gap between the children, it won’t matter because there’s something to do for kids of every age at most water parks. One of the best waterparks in the Caribbean can be found at Beaches Resorts in Jamaica and Turks & Caicos. At the Beaches Pirates Island Water Parks, kids can let their imaginations run wild as they glide down huge waterslides, splash in kiddie pools, have more than their fill at the swim-up soda bar, use the water cannons on their new friends, experience whirlpools, and go on lazy river journeys. When all of that is done, you can give the surf simulator a whirl for more excitement!

3. Eco-friendly beach vacations

Beach vacations never get old. When you’re traveling with a family of 4 or 5, especially, it can be a great lifesaver just to go somewhere nice with a beach and save the money you would have spent on other recreational activities. Options for beach vacations include booking a resort that’s literally on the beachfront or staying in an area close enough to get to the beach without too much hassle. The obvious better choice is being right on the beach, as you won’t have to think about how to get there, how much it’s going to cost you, and whether you will be able to find your way back to your accommodation. Beaches’ eco-friendly resorts are all beachfront properties, which means you’ll have dibs on the best beach spots daily. Beaches Negril is right on the breathtaking Seven Mile Beach in Negril, while Beaches Turks & Caicos is right on Grace Bay Beach, one of the most highly rated beaches in the world. If that isn’t enough incentive for an all-inclusive resort vacation with Beaches, throw into the picture the fact that each of their resorts has been awarded an EarthCheck certification for their preservation of pristine natural environments. With Beaches, your very presence will speak to the importance of conservation and environmental protection.

4. Scuba vacations

You don’t need to be a scuba expert to enjoy a scuba vacation – all you need is a certification. Once you’ve secured that, you’ll be free to explore the magic of the undersea. If you’re from a family of sea lovers, this option may work particularly well for you and your kids. Explore places like the Caribbean, known for its great diving conditions and some of the most gorgeous and healthy reefs on the planet. Beaches Resorts in the Caribbean are great for scuba diving as you can dive for free during your vacation (up to 2 dives per day). If you’re not already PADI® certified, you can get certified during your vacation. If you are, you’ll be able to get right into the action once you arrive!

5. Golf vacations

The earlier you introduce your children to golf, the higher the chances that it’s going to be something they really get into. Golfing families will appreciate a resort that caters specifically to families who want to make the green come alive green during their vacay. Golf is competitive and fun, making it perfect for families with multiple kids. The love of the game, and the opportunity to meet new friends and enjoy the outdoors all bring a rousing golfing experience together. At resorts like Beaches Ocho Rios in Jamaica, which has its own championship golf course, you’ll have fun teeing off regardless of your skill level. Private instruction is available for junior golfers, and there’s also a Junior Golf Club and weekly Golf Clinics. Club rentals are free for juniors.

6. Amusement parks

Amusement parks are a great choice for bigger families as there is guaranteed to be something for everyone to do. When going to an amusement park as a family, parents can take turns going on rides with the kids, especially in cases where one of their kids isn’t tall enough to ride or simply doesn’t want to. Otherwise, you all can enjoy the good times together, while trying to convince older kids not to pick the most heart-attack-inducing rides in the park!

7. Camping vacations

You can’t go wrong with camping for a family vacation as even the planning stages give everyone a chance to get involved. If your kids are old enough they can help you figure out a destination, and then decide what to pack. One of the most fun aspects of camping is selecting a tent. Many families go for tents that are durable and also somewhat modern, with convenient and fun features. If you have a family with 4 people or more, it’s a good idea to invest in a tent with separators, so everyone has their own little space. Parents can also be in one section, with the kids in the other.

8. Fishing vacations

A fishing trip is a great idea for a family looking for a mixture of recreation and learning. Fishing can teach your children (and yourself if you’re just starting off) many important lessons ranging from the value of patience to where seafood comes from. Through the experience, your kids will also be able to learn things that can be useful in the classroom environment, like how to differentiate between different fish and marine species, and what the food cycle is all about. Additionally, just being on the water will prove relaxing for you all, as you spend time together in a laid-back environment. Whether you charter a boat or hop onboard a friend’s vessel with your family, your kids will quickly get sucked into the thrill of this experience.

9. National park & nature reserve vacations

Use the power of nature to help your kids learn how to be calm and focused while having fun. To include a national park or a nature reserve in your vacation, you’ll need to plan a trip to a place that offers these attractions. This is a budget-friendly option, as many national parks are free to explore or cost very little. Those with an entrance fee usually use those funds to maintain the space, which will have a feel-good effect for you and the kids knowing that you contributed positively to the environment.

Activities you can enjoy at a park or nature reserve include hiking, swimming, and exploring. You can even pack and bring along lunch for a family picnic in a serene and natural environment. Here you can embark on nature trails (4 in all), bird watching, or just revel in the magnitude of the surrounding beauty. Greenery mixes in with waterfalls in some areas, and you can go with a guide to find the best spots. You and your family can also choose to explore solo, navigating this rugged and captivating space like the nature explorers you were born to be. Once you’ve made your way back to your starting point, you can settle in for a picnic or fire up the barbeque pit and lounge in one of the gazebos. There’s also access to the Blue and John Crow National Park Visitors’ Center from Holywell Park and a Children's Discovery Zone.

If you want to stay overnight to bask in the beauty of this space a little longer, you can rent a cabin, which includes a living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom, and covered porch with great sea views. Abeokuta Paradise Nature Park

With 13 acres of land to explore, you won’t run out of ground to cover at the Abeokuta Paradise Nature Park in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The land in this area was previously part of a plantation, and while there, you’ll be able to scope the ruins of a Great House that once flourished in this space, as well as the oldest swimming pool on the island. There are views of sugarcane fields and the ocean in the distance, and this is a great place to start explaining to your kids the differences in their own livelihoods as compared to life in the shoes of people (past and present) who might not be as privileged. There are also waterfalls and hiking trails in this area, as well as a mineral water swimming zone where you can get cozy on the deck, barbecue, or even camp out.

Barney’s Flower & Hummingbird Garden

The name of this Jamaican attraction promises an experience that’s unique and grounded in the island’s natural beauty, and that’s precisely what you’ll find. Lush greenery is everywhere you look in this garden at Hylton Avenue in Negril. You’ll need a reservation to explore the gardens, which is open daily from 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM – only groups of six are allowed in at one time. The garden is also not suitable for children under the age of 6.

It has over the years become a not-so-hidden treasure of this land, where visitors can explore the gardens, scope for the 18 of Jamaica’s 28 endemic bird species that can be spotted here, visit the art gallery, marvel at or purchase some authentic ‘mozeggs’ (craft using egg shells with a mosaic effect), or check out other unique Jamaican craft items. Of course, the major part of this experience is visiting the gardens on a tour via a terrace carved into the hillside, but once you’ve completed the family-friendly tour, you can also check out the ‘Ahhh… Treasures’ gift shop for interesting trinkets to take back home.
