Set amid the ambrosial mountains and waterscape of Ocho Rios, Jamaica, this 2-day tournament competition, exclusively for Sandals Select Rewards Members, will be full of the ‘Welcome Home’ events and parties you’ve become accustomed to, as well as exquisite meals amid the extravagant Sandals Golf & Country Club golf course, a fabulous awards dinner, and so much more!
For pros and neophytes alike, this tournament is ‘hole-in-one’ fun for all to enjoy. But just in case you don’t play like the pros, be sure that you can talk like one. Here are some Caribbean-charged golf terms for you to memorize:
Backside (or Backswing): “Backside” is not only a popular Jamaican expression, it is also a golf term used to explain the backward part of the swing starting from the ground and going back behind the head.
Albatross: The British influenced many Caribbean nations, but also apparently golf terminology, as the word is an old British name for a double eagle, meaning a score of 3 under par on a single hole. For example, it can be a score of a 2 on a par 5 hole which is a very good score and doesn’t happen often.
Banana Ball: Bananas are fruit staples of the Caribbean but in golf terms, a banana ball is a slice that curves in a banana-like shape from left to right (for right-handed golfers).
Beach: Often referring to sand and water in the islands, for golf, a “beach” is an expression for sandtrap.
Nassau: Not only the capital and largest city of the Bahamas, “Nassau” is a form of competition which breaks down the play into front nine, back nine and overall 18 holes. A point is allowed for each nine and the total 18.
