While discovering the Caribbean together at Beaches delightfully involves splashing in the waves with loved ones or whizzing down waterslides, there are some activities you may have not considered that could afford a bigger impact on your family than the entire vacation in itself. Those are the “voluntourism” initiatives conducted through the Sandals Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Beaches’ parent company, Sandals Resorts International.

Celebrating 5 years of making a difference in the Caribbean in the areas of Education, Community and Environment, the Sandals Foundation has partnered with Island Routes Caribbean Adventures to deliver guests of Beaches an activity called the Reading Road Trip.

Reading Road Trip is one initiative that caught the attention of USA Today in the recent article, “10 best family volunteer vacations, ” in which resort companies were recognized not for their killer activities on resort,  but for the invaluable experiences taking place in the heart of their local communities. It’s there where a vacation moment can really steal your heart, as it did with the little girls pictured above. This particular Beaches guest and her family participated in a Reading Road Trip journey while visiting Beaches Negril Resort & Spa in Jamaica. The family ventured to (insert school name here) and local school children enjoyed making a connection not only with each other, but with the joy of giving back, thanks to this marvelous voluntourism activity started by the Sandals Foundation.

In an effort to boost literacy in primary and early childhood schools throughout the Caribbean islands, the Sandals Foundation hosts guests of Sandals and Beaches at a number of its 26 adopted schools where they engage in reading exercises with local school children and assist them with their reading skill worksheets. Staff are on hand to guide participants on how to engage students and provide materials. In addition, volunteers are encouraged to bring new or gently used books to share with the children and donate to the school’s library.
